Morocco is in North Africa, and Marrakech is in the middlewest of the country. People also call it the “Red City” because the buildings and walls are red. Its longitude and latitude in space are about 8.00° W and 31.63° N. This city is 466 meters (1,529 feet) above sea level. It is in the Tensift Valley and is surrounded by green Haouz fields that go all the way to the beautiful Atlas Mountains in the southeast.
These mountains are often covered in snow during the winter, making a beautiful backdrop for the city and an important part of the area’s landscape. Since Marrakech is close to the Atlas Mountains, it is a popular starting point for hikers, explorers, and people who want to see the Berber towns spread across the mountain ranges. The snow in this mountain range melts and flows into the Tensift River just north of the city.
It is 327 kilometers (203 miles) southwest of Rabat, Morocco’s central city, and 239 kilometers (149 miles) south of Casablanca, the country’s business center. The city is also about 170 kilometers (106 miles) from Essaouira on the Atlantic coast. This means that even though it is in the middle of nowhere, it is relatively easy to get to the water.
