Tangier is in the north of Morocco, where the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea meet. It is near the Strait of Gibraltar, across the water from southern Spain. Because of this, Tangier has always been an important port city and a key link between Europe and Africa.

The city lies at 35.7595° N and 5.8340° W; its shores are on the Mediterranean and the Atlantic. This, in addition to beautiful beaches, gives Tangier a long history of being on the water. It’s only 9 miles across the water to Spain, and Tangier is 250 km (155 miles) north of Rabat, the city of Morocco. It’s also 62 miles (100 km) from Ceuta, which is part of Spain.

Because of its strategic position, Tangier has been a meeting place for many cultures over the years. People from Phoenicia, Rome, the Arab world, Portugal, and Great Britain have all left their mark. Many different kinds of people live in this city because it was made a foreign zone in the early 1900s.
